5 Mistakes People Make When Buying Furniture

26 Nov, 2019 | Tips & Advice

There is nothing better than curling up on a cosy couch, however if your current model is looking a little worse for wear, then it may just need a little maintenance. If that’s not an option it’s important to do your research, as buying new furniture is a long-term investment. But with all the products on the market it can be a little daunting, so here is our guide to the most common 5 mistakes people make when buying furniture.

Mistake #1 – Ignoring measurements

There’s nothing more frustrating than buying a new couch that doesn’t fit in the room it’s intended for – or even through the front door! But it’s one of the more common mistakes people make when buying furniture

Furniture in a showroom can often look different once it’s delivered, so make sure you take accurate measurements of the space available, and consider the size and shape of the room as well. And don’t forget to account for windows, door openings, walkways and electrical sockets that you need to access. Be size-wise!

Mistake #2 – Forgetting functionality

When choosing furniture, think about its purpose before you decide to buy. Visually it should suit your style but also your current décor. When buying a new lounge, your choice of fabric is important too, whether your preference is neutrals or a bold or patterned colour. Durable fabrics like leather are ideal for furniture in high traffic zones whereas linens can offer a luxurious feel if messy kids and pets aren’t an issue!

Your new couch should also be functional, comfortable and have enough seating for everyone. Modular or sectional lounges are great for larger families, while reclining sofas can be perfect for TV-watching couples.

Mistake #3 – Sacrificing quality

When it comes to furniture buying mistakes, look out for quality timbers and frames that are secured by nails or dowels rather than glue and staples.

Upholstery should be durable and hard-wearing – fabrics like linen and cotton are winners, however when mixed with a cheap synthetic will often pill after a year or so. Leather couches wear well over time, but they do need maintenance to keep them looking their best.

Cushion fillings are also worth considering – they should be firm and hold their shape. Foam cushions are affordable, however they can ‘deflate’ quickly if made from low-density materials.

Mistake #4 – Following trends

One of the more common interior design mistakes people make is falling for the latest furniture trends. When it comes to couches, big patterns and trendy textiles can fall out of fashion quite quickly.

When it comes to colour, it’s always wise to play it safe with neutrals, as you can always add pops of colour with a throw rug or cushions. If your heart is set on a bright coloured sofa, opt for a solid colour that will be easy to style as trends change over time.

Mistake #5 – Overlooking maintenance

When it comes to buying furniture if you purchase a quality couch, chances are you’ll have years of lounging to enjoy. However, like most things it will probably need a little tender loving care once in a while to avoid the cost of having to buy a new one.

Furniture upholstery repair experts are experienced in a range of maintenance tasks, including foam replacement and frame, spring and webbing repairs. They can also assist with undone or broken stitching, cracked or peeling leather, stains and ink marks and sun or pet damage.
